چکیده

THERE IS still a question regarding the presence of active mechanisms of control for the pulmonary vessels in man. The controversy continues, since evidence for active vasomotion has usually been indirect. Because, in the past, it has been assumed that changes in pulmonary vascular resistance necessarily reflect changes in pulmonary vascular caliber, workers have drawn conflicting conclusions from similar experimental results. Recent excellent reviews summarize the present concepts.1-5 The caliber and, therefore, the volume of a vessel depend on (a) the transmural pressure and on (b) the distensibility of its wall. As defined by Burton,5 transmural pressure is the difference between the distending pressure inside and the tissue pressure outside the vessel. Vascular distensibility depends on mural elasticity as well as on active tension or muscular tone. Theoretically, passive changes in vascular caliber would be associated with concordant changes in pulmonary blood volume and transmural distending pressure, i.e., they would rise together or fall together. Thus, passive narrowing would be associated with a fall both in distending pressure and pulmonary blood volume, whereas passive dilation would be associated with a rise in both these parameters. These changes could occur with-

PULMONARY VASCULAR MUSCLE PROLIFERATION AS A RESULT OF PROTEIN AND mRNA-eNOS ALTERATIONS IN A RAT MODEL OF CHF

Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS) produces nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine and is important for the maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis. Congestive heart failure (CHF) generally results in increased pulmonary blood flow and if untreated leads to pulmonary hypertension and end stage heart failure. We therefore hypothesized that increased pulmonary flow without changes in pres...

Some evidence for active constriction in the human pulmonary vascular bed.

T HE capacity of small pulmonary blood vessels for vasoconstriction remains a controversial subject.1 2 Evidence is accumulating which suggests that at least under abnormal circumstances vasoconstriction of the pulmonary vascular bed may occur.3 The following is a report on changes in pulmonary arteriolar resistance (PAR) during norepinephrine infusion based on simultaneous measurements of bloo...

The Role of Anion Exchanger on Pulmonary Vascular Response to Sustained Alveolar Hypoxia in the Isolated Perfused Rabbit Lung

Background: Some respiratory diseases may induce alveolar hypoxia thereby hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV). However, the mechanisms of this physiologic phenomenon are not fully understood. This study was the first to investigate the role of anion exchanger in sustained HPV.Methods: Experiments were performed in the isolated perfused rabbit lung. After preparation, the lungs were divided...

Molecular mechanisms regulating immune responses in thromboangiitis obliterans: a comprehensive review

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is a thrombotic-occlusive as well as an inflammatory peripheral vascular disease with unknown etiology. Recent evidence has supported the immunopathogenesis of the disease, however, the factors contributing to the altered immune function and vascular tissue inflammation are still unclear. This review was intended to collate the more current knowledge on the regu...

Dynamic responsiveness of the vascular bed as a regulatory mechanism in vasomotor control

The dynamics of blood supply to a vascular bed depend on lumped mechanical properties of that bed, namely the compliance (C), resistance (R), viscoelasticity (K), and inertance (L). While the study of regulatory mechanisms has so far placed the emphasis largely on R, it is not known how the remaining properties contribute collectively to the play of dynamics in vasomotor control. To examine thi...
